PRINCIPLE AND AIM

The Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University offers a Master of Arts Degree in Cultural Management with three fields of concentration: Performing Arts and Theatre Management, Cultural Management for Tourism and Visual Arts Management. M.A. in Cultural Management started its programme in 1999 to provide students with a challenging opportunity to become leaders in arts and cultural organisations through more systematic, creative and socially focused training. This is a programme for people involved in the management of cultural heritage and cultural resources. The programme objective is to prepare students for a fast-moving, ever-changing, and global environment.

Cultural management is a new field of study only recognized recently as a distinct discipline and profession in its own unique capacity, career model, teaching and research need. Its significance is increasing in a changing society where public and private sectors have to find new roles to play in response to rapid changes in the social and economic environment of cultural organizations. The cultural sector has a broad definition that includes live performing arts, museum and heritage, entertainment well as tourism. In order to optimize the potential of the cultural workforce, reinforcement of management in the cultural sector should be an urgent priority. Few Thai universities and institutions offer teaching in this discipline.

Yet, Thailand is in need of qualified human resource in this field. Chulalongkorn University has, therefore, initiated a cultural management programme at the graduate level in order to produce graduates who will be equipped with relevant methods and techniques to qualify for cultural management and culture-related positions. The programme will provide them with necessary management skills in coping with the business and environment in which they operate.
